In my first installment, I shared my fears on censorship of social media and the danger it presents. A danger so great it could lead to history repeating itself.
So, what can we do about it?
Fight! Fight as if your life depended on it. Because it might.
Many have forsaken Facebook, Twitter and the like, leaving them for the liberal bastions that they are. I cannot do that. I will remain on Facebook, spreading my conservative thoughts and views until I am forever banished – only to rise again under another guise. Why? It’s not that I don’t have other things to do; things that won’t draw the ire of Zuckerberg aficionados. I will do this because I know there are others out there like me that feel strongly about protecting the right to express our opinions when, how and where we choose. And so I shall fight.
Why? I am already on ‘Conservative Friendly’ social media platforms. I’ve already stated I can find other things “to do”. I can stay in these ‘friendly zones, share my thoughts and pat myself on the back – but I’m not the “pat yourself on the back” kinda guy. It is not within me to allow the Mark Zuckerberg’s and Jack Dorsey’s of the world free reign to censure thoughts and ideas counter to theirs. I cannot allow them to spoon feed their ideologies to their masses unopposed.
Why? Because it is dangerous. Dangerous because we just don’t know how far these ideologies will go. I’m not much of a conspiracy-theorist (or at least I didn’t used to be), but it doesn’t take much to project that the end goal of some is to change how our society thinks: Conservatism is bad. National pride is bad. Criticism of government is bad. Wealth is bad. Christianity is bad. Heterosexuality is bad. Free thought is bad. All to what end – a New World Order? Global Socialism? I don’t know – but I’m going to fight damn hard to prevent whatever “it” is happening. When confronted with a factcheck, I will make the fact-checker prove my facts are untrue or misleading. And when they don’t, call them out on it. When a post of mine is counted with an opposing thought, I will engage in discussion and do my best to explain my “side”. If see a post that runs counter to American values, I will do my best to point out why these values are important. Some of my tactics may include humor and sarcasm while some will most definitely be a blunt, head-on rebuke. Will this make me popular? No. Do I care? Also no. I feel too strongly that we are on the cusp of losing many of the values, freedoms and rights America was founded on to care about my feelings being hurt.
And now I urge you to join me. Let your voice be heard. A single mouse makes but a mere squeak; a million mice roar!
I am one of the facebook, actually most of the social media platform, defectors. I left for all the reasons you mentioned and more. The fact is that social media has been weaponized and, for some (like me) a vocal outcry can have more significant consequences than hurt feelings and lost friendships. I agree that we can no longer be “the silent majority” however some of us must be careful of how we vocalize. Know that some of us stand ready to defend you and I, at least, hope you will speak just a little more loudly on my behalf.
